Territorial Directive College Shares Regnum Christi’s Response to the Needs of Marriage and Family in North America

In a letter to Regnum Christi members of all vocations in North America, the Territorial Directive College of Regnum Christi (TDC) shared their direction for the territory regarding marriage and family ministry. This area of evangelization has been a priority for Regnum Christi globally since the 2024 General Convention identified it as one, and that priority was re-affirmed in this territory in the 2025-2030 Strategy that shared the vision of Regnum Christi’s mission on the ground, committing to: “make marriage and family our primary apostolic focus over the next 6 years, unleashing the evangelizing power of the sacrament of marriage and forming missionary families.”

In 2025, the TDC convoked a Marriage & Family Commission led by BJ and Jeannine Agugliaro, along with Fr. Peter Hopkins, LC, Fr. Juan Sabadell, LC, Monica Treviño (Consecrated Woman of Regnum Christi), and Dr. Kathy Musslewhite. Over the course of almost a year, they looked at the marriage and family evangelization happening through Regnum Christi across the territory and considered around 65 initiatives led by RC members across the United States and Canada. Their work culminated in a Marriage & Family Symposium that drew nearly 70 RC apostles who work in marriage & family evangelization, the first event of its kind.

Drawing on all this input and discernment, the TDC shared the vision for the future in their letter, which contained an appendix with the outcomes and recommendations of the Symposium. It stated that:

“Applying this feedback from the Commission and the Symposium, we see several key ways our charism can contribute to this important area of mission:

  • First, Regnum Christi is uniquely positioned to form Christian leaders and formators— couples who accompany other couples, develop parish and diocesan leaders, and expand apostolates through networks.

  • Second, our relational approach prioritizes accompaniment and community over isolated programs, fostering long-term growth through small groups, mentoring, and communities rooted in daily life.

  • Third, Regnum Christi offers the potential for a comprehensive, full life-cycle approach to marriage and family ministry, supporting individuals from youth and dating through all stages of married and family life, including times of difficulty and healing, such as divorce. There is more to be explored in how ECYD can be a platform to form not only the adolescents who participate, but their families. The continuation of these same young people as Regnum Christi young adults into their vocational fulfillment allows for a natural path of accompaniment and formation.

  • Lastly, our broader mission of cultural impact and renewal calls us to work alongside parishes and dioceses, sharing resources, and aligning with Church priorities, leaning into our mission at the service of the Church and society.

The TDC is responding with three concrete actions, which it calls “significant and important steps in the right direction,” with more to follow.

  • A new Area of Apostolic Coordination in the Mission Support Team. Led by Betty Rivera, Consecrated Woman of Regnum Christi, under the direction of Fr. Aaron Smith, LC, Territorial Delegate for North America. This area which will begin in November will support marriage and family evangelization, among other apostolic areas, across the territory as “a catalyst for synergy to help maximize our impact” rather than an additional layer of directive authority.

  • A Marriage and Family Ministry Event in May 2028. Building on this year’s symposium, the TDC will again gather those working in marriage and family apostolates to share ideas and best practices. Date and location will be announced in the future.

  • RC Mission Connection. Members are invited to explore and add to this dynamic online platform for sharing local apostolates and best practices. Leaders are encouraged to reach out to one another directly, build cross collaboration, and share resources.

The TDC also recognized the need to:

  • Develop territorial guidelines, resource guides, and strategic focus areas spanning dating, marriage preparation, family life, and support for divorced couples and their families.

  • Study possibilities for ongoing formation of those involved in leading marriage and family initiatives, especially through Divine Mercy University.

  • Align efforts with the Church’s Catechumenal Pathway for Married Life, in coordination with pastors and parish life.

  • Foster locality ownership of marriage and family apostolates and their development, making sure that these apostolates are front and center in the mission focus of each one.

  • Teamwork with ECYD to foster initiatives, to better engage parents and families

  • Foster and promote those apostolates that help Hispanic immigrant families, children of divorced parents, and other groups of people that often receive limited pastoral accompaniment.

  • Foster synergies between the different RC Marriage and Family apostolates in North America, also leveraging our two Legionary retreat centers in Potomac, MD and Cupertino, CA.

The TDC closed its letter with thanks to all who serve in this field, and a reminder that the mission rests on Christ:

“Let us seek then, to remain in communion with Christ and with his Church, like the branch on the vine knowing that in Him alone is all true fruitfulness” (SRCF 9).
