For two years now, we have been learning how to read the Bible — how to recognise the prophecies and shadows through which the Old Testament points to Christ. This year, we reap the harvest. In the first three sessions, we will apply everything we have learnt to our Mother Mary and discover how her great titles — Queen of Heaven, Mother of the Church, New Eve, New Ark, Ever-Virgin — and the dogmas that flow from them are drawn from the biblical text. In the last two, we will enter the temple of Jerusalem itself, to find the Mass hidden in its sacrifices and the whole story of salvation written into Israel’s calendar of feasts. Newcomers are always welcome — everything you need will be explained along the way.
Session 1 – Queen of Heaven and Mother of the Church.
Why do Catholics pray to Mary? Two Old Testament shadows give us the answer — she is our queen and our mother. The Gebirah, the queen mother of the Davidic kingdom, interceded for the people from a throne at the king’s right hand — “Make your request, my mother; for I will not refuse you” (1 Kgs 2:20) — and Rachel, Israel’s matriarch, prefigures the mother Jesus gave us from the cross (Jn 19:27).
Session 2 – New Eve and New Ark.
Where does the Bible teach the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption? Nowhere — explicitly. Yet both dogmas flow from two shadows the first Christians discovered very early: Mary is the New Eve — if Eve was created without sin, so must she be — and the New Ark — if the vessel that carried the shadows of Jesus was incorruptible, what of the one who carried Jesus himself?
Session 3 – Mary Ever-Virgin.
What does it mean to say that Mary remained a virgin before, during, and after Jesus’ birth? And what about the “brothers of Jesus”? Perhaps the most difficult Marian doctrine for modern minds, the perpetual virginity was held firmly by the first Christians, who found it throughout the shadows and prophecies of the Old Testament.
Session 4 – The Sacrifices of the Old Testament.
Why did God command Israel to offer lambs, bread, wine, and incense in the temple? Beginning with the covenant at Mt. Sinai, we will discover what the sacrifices meant for Israel and how they point to Christ. The daily tamid sacrifice was offered at 9am and 3pm — the very hours at which Jesus was crucified and died. After this session, you will never attend Mass the same way again.
Session 5 – The Feasts of Israel and the Harvest of Souls.
Three times a year, God commanded Israel to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem — for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Why? These feasts were harvest festivals: the barley, the wheat, and the final ingathering. In Christ, they became prophecies of another harvest — the harvest of souls, which began with his Resurrection, continues in the Church, and will end when God dwells with his people forever. “Lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest” (Jn 4:35).

Fr. Matthew Bender, LC
Fr. Matthew Bender was born in Syracuse, New York in March of 1991. He entered the Immaculate Conception Apostolic School where he finished high school before joining the Legion of Christ’s novitiate. He studied Classical Humanities in Salamanca, Spain, and has both a B.A. in Theology and a master’s degree in Philosophy from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. Fr. Matthew was recently ordained a priest on April 29th, 2023, and is currently collaborating in the general government of the Legionaries of Christ and at the Vatican. Since 2022, he has been serving as chaplain for the group of lay Regnum Christi members in the United Kingdom and has recently been named local director for Regnum Christi in London.
Fr. Anton Vogelsang , LC
Fr. Anton Vogelsang was born into a Dutch diplomatic family in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1967 and grew up in Liberia, Spain, Costa Rica and the U.S. In 1989, he obtained a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from the University of Chicago and then worked as a Software Engineer for Oracle Corporation from 1989 until 1993. That same year he joined the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ to become a priest. During his formation, he obtained a B.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. Since his ordination in 2001, he has held various positions including: global director of IT for the congregation, chaplain at the Anahuac University in Mexico City, community superior in Düsseldorf, and Territorial Secretary and member of the Territorial Directive College for the Regnum Christi Federation in Central and Western Europe. He currently lives in Rome serving as the vice-superior of the community of legionary professors, develops online courses on how to read the Bible, was recently named assistant local director for Regnum Christi in London.
