Mission Youth Outreach Continues During the Pandemic

As 2020 draws to a close and Christmas approaches, many of us are breathing a sigh of relief in hope that the coming months will bring back a little bit of normality. So much of our lives has changed or adapted and that has included the mission and evangelization outreach. How can you reach people with the message of Jesus’s love with masks and distance?

This is the question that Mission Youth missionaries have been asking themselves for the past nine months. And since the Holy Spirit is the source of all creativity, the missionary response in these times has been bold and beautiful.

It started back in March, 2020 when in person Holy Week Missions were canceled. Many cities did not let the COVID restrictions stop the mission but transformed the mission into virtual encounter, mercy and outreach. San Jose, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Atlanta, Toledo and many other cities used many forums and social media platforms to reach families, young people and those in need. They joined in prayer, service and community.

After Holy Week, the missionary outreach did not stop. During the summer months, young people from Philadelphia traveled to Denver to share a mission experience in the Pax Christi parish. As well, a small mission core team from New Orleans traveled to St. Croix, Virgin Islands to set up for a future mission trip.

As the school year started, more cities began to engage in mission. Atlanta and Philadelphia set up a monthly day mission to continue to serve the poor and homeless communities most affected by COVID. Washington DC and Houston also held mission events. This missionary boldness is bringing hope not only to their local communities but to other cities as well, showing that the mission continues.
