As the Conclave unfolded and Pope Leo XIV was elected, many Legionaries of Christ were in Rome, either working there apostolically, studying, or visiting for the recent ordinations of 23 new priests.
Several Legionaries had the opportunity to share their perspective on this historic time in the Church with the media. Here are some of them.
In the lead-up to the Conclave Fr. John joins a panel to discuss the work of the Cardinals in choosing the next pope.
“I would love to have an American, but I’ve always heard that the strongest country — they aren’t going to vote for a pope from the strongest superpower,” said Fr. David Daly, a leader in the Legionaries of Christ in Rome.
(Fr. David is interviewed at about 1:48)
Fr. Michael Baggot, LC, was in St. Peter’s Square as the new Holy Father was presented, where he was interviewed by MSNBC’s roving reporter on the ground.
Father Vito Crincoli, LC, discussed what an American pope means for the future of the Catholic Church and the history of the papal name Leo XIV.
As the Conclave began, Fr. Frederick Kaiser, LC, spoke with KBS in Seoul, South Korea, about this moment in the Church.
“Who in our lifetime would have thought that we would see a North American Holy Father?” said Father Thomas Montanaro, an American priest with the Legionaries of Christ. Click here to read.
“These cardinals have spent time in prayer. They’re in front of God, and they’re trying to listen to what God wants. And I think that’s very important for our listeners to kind of understand this. This is not a political campaign. This is God’s campaign. He’s working through human instruments, and we’re all praying that the cardinals can hear that voice of God.”
