MUSIC FOR MISSION

Music for Mission is a program that forms Catholic musicians to use their talents to spread the Gospel, run by the Legionaries of Christ in the Diocese of Hamilton. Thanks to the support of the Dinah and Fred Gretsch Family Foundation, we offer scholarships to Catholic students, to cover the cost of their musical formation.

How do you join Music for Mission?

This includes letting us know where you are involved in music (e.g. your parish, school, or youth group). If you aren’t doing music in a Catholic setting yet, just let us know and we’ll help to connect you in the way that best suits you.

If you know who you want to be your teacher, let us know who it is in your application. It’s important that they be able to teach the style of music needed for worship.

If you don’t have a teacher or need help finding one, just let us know on the application and we’ll try to help!

Meet the Chaplain or a team member from Music for Mission along with your family. This can happen wherever suits you best, at home, at a parish nearby, or at Father’s residence.

You’ll be expected to attend 2 formative events, either a retreat or a mission, during the semester you’re applying for.

It’s up to the parents to arrange the lessons with the music teacher while ensuring that they contact Music for Mission to cover the cost.

Once all this has been done, Music for Mission will cover the costs of the lessons for up to a total cost of up to $500. At the end of each semester, there is a simple process for renewing the agreement for another semester. This gives us the opportunity to evaluate your progress.

We’ll also check in regularly with the parents and music teacher on the progress and commitment to the program. Keeping up with personal practice between lessons is essential.

What are the requirements to receive the scholarship?

1. Relationship with Christ

A sincere and growing relationship with Christ, expressed in a daily prayer life, and including a desire to serve him with your music.

2. Participation in a band

Regular participation in a choir, worship band, serving as cantor, or the like, in your parish, school or youth group.

3. Monthly spiritual check-in

Have a conversation once a month with the Chaplain or a team member, to check-in on your training and growth as a musical missionary.

4. Attend a retreat or mission

Attendance at one of the Missions or Retreats held by Music for Mission. These will give you the chance to use your gifts along with other youth.

5. Daily practice

Regular practice between lessons is essential – preferably daily.

Alex Kucera has lived in Atlanta, GA, for the last 46 years. He is one of 9 children, married to his wife Karmen, and has 3 girls, one grandson, and a granddaughter on the way. Alex joined Regnum Christi in 2007. Out of the gate, he joined the Helping Hands Medical Missions apostolate and is still participating today with the Ghana Friendship Mission.

In 2009, Alex was asked to be the Atlanta RC Renewal Coordinator for the Atlanta Locality to help the RC members with the RC renewal process. Alex became a Group Leader in 2012 for four of the Atlanta Men’s Section Teams and continues today. Running in parallel, in 2013, Alex became a Team Leader and shepherded a large team of good men.

Alex was honored to be the Atlanta Mission Coordinator between 2010 to 2022 (12 years), coordinating 5-8 Holy Week Mission teams across Georgia. He also created and coordinated missions at a parish in Athens, GA, for 9 years. Alex continues to coordinate Holy Week Missions, Advent Missions, and Monthly missions at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Cumming, GA.

From 2016 to 2022, Alex also served as the Men’s Section Assistant in Atlanta. He loved working with the Men’s Section Director, the Legionaries, Consecrated, and Women’s Section leadership teams.
